Snallygaster

Bob LeMent & Rob Howell Season 1 Episode 7

In this episode, Bob and Rob discuss the Snallygaster. In the hills of 18th century Maryland, German immigrants once spoke of a terrifying creature they called the “Schneller Geist” – or “quick spirit.”

Eventually colloquialized as “Snallygaster,” it was described as a dragon-like beast – half-reptile and half-bird – with enormous wings, a beak lined with razor-sharp teeth, octopus-like tentacles, and a single glowing eye in the center of its forehead. This bloodthirsty creature was said to swoop silently from the sky, snatching livestock and humans for its prey.

The legend remained largely local folklore until 1909, when a series of newspaper reports thrust the Snallygaster into the national spotlight – turning a regional mythological monster into one of America’s most infamous cryptids.
